After spending a magical morning getting lost among the masterworks of Rembrandt and Vermeer at the iconic Rijksmuseum, we stepped right out into the real-world charm of Amsterdam. We spent the rest of the afternoon wandering through the lively streets of the Leidsebuurt, a perfect neighborhood filled with independent boutiques, cozy local cafes, and classic canal views.
Our morning started in the absolute best way possible. We stepped out of our hotel and made a quick stop at one of Amsterdam's incredible local coffee shops. Now, what makes these spots so unique and completely different from back home is that they actually bake their own fresh, delicious pastries and baked goods right on-site. Sitting there with a warm cup and a fresh pastry was the perfect fuel for a busy day of sightseeing! ☕🍩 After waking up, we walked toward the massive, castle-like Rijksmuseum 🏛️.
💥Travel Tip: Just like the Van Gogh Museum, this is the other big-hitter where you absolutely must buy your tickets online in advance to secure a timed entry slot. If you don't, you simply won't get in. (Check out my Tips Page for all the logistical info on how to book this easily!).
Because we had our tickets ready on our phones, we completely bypassed the massive ticket lines outside and swept right through the entrance. Once inside, you can grab a media headset to guide you through the galleries (it's free). Be prepared: you will find crowds everywhere, especially packed tightly around legendary masterworks like Rembrandt’s The Night Watch and Vermeer’s The Milkmaid. 👥🎨
But here is my absolute favorite hidden gem: whatever you do, don't skip the beautiful Cuypers Library! 📚✨ It’s the oldest and largest art history library in the Netherlands, and looking down from the balcony feels like stepping straight into a multi-story, neo-Gothic fairy tale. It is breathtakingly quiet and an amazing spot for photos.
Before heading out to explore the neighborhood, we spent some time in the gorgeous museum shop. It’s the perfect spot to pick up a meaningful keepsake that isn't your standard tourist plastic! 🛍️🎨
After soaking in all that high art at the museum, we stepped back out and headed straight into the vibrant streets of the Leidsebuurt neighborhood. It was the perfect change of pace🚶♀️✨We stepped into a local waffle shop and treated ourselves to a fresh, warm, loaded Dutch waffle that was absolute heaven—crispy on the outside, perfectly chewy on the inside, and just the right amount of decadent comfort food to keep our energy up for exploring. 🧇🤤 But the culinary adventure didn’t stop there! You truly cannot walk more than a block or two in this area without passing a beautifully curated cheese boutique, and we absolutely couldn't resist stepping inside for some impromptu cheese tasting. 🧀🍷
Between the sweet treats, the savory bites, and the lovely independent shops, it turned out to be the ultimate way to wrap up our afternoon! 🇳🇱🛍️
